WDS and silent installation switches in unattend, not working

$

0

To make a long story short: I am trying to deploy Windows 7 Enterprise x64 onto an HP EliteBook 8560w laptop, using WDS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, with Driver Injection as our means of driver installation on the image.. Everything installs fine, except for the USB3.0, fingerprint, and wi-fi drivers. Running on a deadline here, I am trying to get these stubborn drivers to install silently to the image from a network share, with the designated Msiexec switches (since they're packaged as msi's as well) in the unattend.xml of the image. So if my share were, say "\\ABC" then my lines in the unattend would look like the below:

             <CommandLine>"\\ABC\NETLOGON\HPDrivers\fingerprint\EXTRACT\HPVFSSVC4.3.126.0.msi" Msiexec /i HPVFSSVC4.3.126.0.msi /q</CommandLine>
                    <Description>Call Fingerprint Reader</Description>
                    <Order>1</Order>
             <CommandLine>"\\ABC\NETLOGON\HPDrivers\sp52146-usb.exe\sp52146-usb\nusb3drv.msi" Msiexec /i nusb3drv.msi /q</CommandLine>
                    <Description>Call USB3.0 Controller</Description>
                    <Order>2</Order>

Can a fresh set of eyes out there on the forums maybe see where I am going wrong on this? Looking forward to your replies one and all--thank you in advance! :)

Creating boot images on WDS server 2012

Hello Everyone, I've a problem creating a list with boot images in WDS 2012.

I have installed WDS on a 2012 Server and booted a Windows 8.1 using PXE from this 2012 server and successfully captured an image which I can now see under install images in WDS. The same I want to do for a WindowsXP and a Windows 7 machine (all for educational use).

The issue is that I do not know how to get this install image to become a boot image so that I can use it for deployment. When I try to add the Windows 8.1 wim-file as a boot image I get an error "The file does not contain a valid boot image". How do I solve this?

Thank you very much for your support

Kind regards Arnold

Volume Activation Management Tool invalid characters bug.

I have a Multiple Activation Key from my Technet subscription for Windows 8 Enterprise, and wanted to
find out how many activations I am allowed, and how many I have left. I was advised by a colleague to
download and install the Volume Activation Management Tool 2.0 from Microsoft.

Whilst using this tool, I've found what appears to be a rather serious bug. It does not allow entry of the
product key I wish to manage. If I copy/paste the key under Add Product Keys, it deliberately ignores
one of the characters in the second section of the product key, specifically the letter N.

If I attempt to enter the key manually, it says Invalid character in the product key when I come to this
particular letter. On further investigation, VAMT 2.0 sees several other letters as invalid characters.
It wrongly says all of the following letters are invalid characters - A - E - I - L - N - O - U - S - Z .

This bug makes it impossible to add the product key, and almost impossible to add any other key.

Deploy existing image remotely via WDS

Hi community,

Admin newbie here,

I want/need to deploy a Windows 7 image to computers that are in another office in another town. They are class room computers and we need to reinstall rather frequently. We do this here locally with WDS. We start the computers, press F12 and choose from a list of our different images.

The problem I have now is, I can't press F12 on the computers in the other office from here. I can wake them up (wake-on-lan), but then I don't know how to proceed. That's the way I imagine. Is there maybe another approach? E.g. push the image from the WDS server to the clients?

Through googling I couldn't find anything that would allow me to do the above. I'm thankful for any hints.

Thank you in advance.

2 NIC with 2 Subnets

I've got to setup a Small server (2008) but I'm trying to know how to do a few simple things.

1) The network has 2 Networks a 10.10.x.x network that's connected to a Static IP & DLS Line, and a 192.168.x.x network that's connected to a Fiber Line (Dynamic IP Address)

2) The Server is only running as a Web server, but pulls data from a second computer on the 10.10.x.x network

3) We need to be able to access the Intranet Website from Either Network, so I'm guessing for both Networks the computer will need 2 Static IP Addresses

4) We would like for all Internet Calls (Web Services) that the server only uses the 192.168.x.x Network

I've done configurations for single Subnet networks, but not this dual network configuration.  Can it be done, and if so, how?

WINDOWS Service on server

We have windows service which continuously process the files.
There are multiple database server each with one instance of this windows service. The service code has been optimized to improve the throughput.
1. What should be deployment strategy to enhance the through put?
2. Deployment on dedicated server for windows service would help?
3. any other suggestion

Failed to set teh selected language as UI language.

I'm baffled. I've added boot.wim from 8.1 RTM and 2012 R2 RTM to a new WDS installation. The default language is en-us according to the file properties in WDS,  but it errors out on the client with: failed to set the selected language as the UI language. I cannot set it to en-us.  It works for any other English variant - just not the US.  I can get it work, for example, as English (Canada) with a US input.  But not English (united states).

Setup Switch, Internet Router on Domain

Hi

I have setup a domain controller windows 2008 R2. I want to know how to setup the Router and Switch so that clients can access the Domain and Internet. The router IP address is 10.0.0.2 and the Switch IP address is 10.0.0.3. I have plugged everything into the Switch. Please note I have two NIC's in the Server.

LAN NIC details are 10.0.0.3 subnet 255.0.0.0 gateway 10.0.0.3 DNS Server 127.0.0.1

WAN NIC details are 192.168.16.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 10.0.0.2 DNS Server 192.168.16.1

I have setup RRAS.

I either get internet or network connectivity (Domain) with various configurations I have tried. I imported the Firewall policy on the server that was there before as I reinstalled the Server.

Can someone suggest the best way to set this up so client machines can access the network (Domain) and internet.

Upgrade Windows Server 2008 to 2008 R2 over remote desktop

Hello,

I have a dedicated server that I have hosted in a remote datacenter.  The server is currently running Windows Server 2008 Standard x86.  It is not a part of a domain and it is the only server in the datacenter that I own.  I would like to upgrade this server to Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.  The catch is that I would prefer not to have to spend the money to have the datacenter's employees perform the upgrade for me.

Does anyone know if it is possible to do this upgrade via remote desktop and upon completion, be able to log back on via remote desktop, without any physical access to the machine at any point of the upgrade?  I am thinking there might be a way (cheap commercial software would be fine) to somehow automate the installation so that it does not need any user interaction whatsoever, or at least not until the machine is in a state that it can be connected to via remote desktop.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to unattended set up Windows 8.1, and I faced with some issues.

  1. In my unattended.xml I tried to name computers both like pc%02# and %MACHINENAME%. none of this worked
  2. when the computer tried to join to the domain, I see following error in Event Viewer: The computer XXX tried to join to the domain YYY but failed. Error code 234. EventID: 4097, Source: NetJoin

What's the reason of this behavior?

Checked: user in unattended.xml has enough rights to join to the domain.

Windows 7 Deployment - Unattended.xml

I have created a custom WIM using OOBE sysprep and placed it within a Windows 7 Pro directory from a Windows Pro DVD and placed on my WDS repository and the image installs fine via PXE boot.

However I am now trying to make installation Unattended, but without luck. I have created a autounattended.xml and placed it on the root of a USB and works great. However, if I place the same autounattend.xml in the root of my WDS repository and from a client press F12 to PXE boot it, it runs the setup.exe and doesn't read the autounattend.xml I get the OOBE splash screen, language etc.

What am I missing here? Please Help.

Autonaming the workstation

Hi,

What is the best way to make sure a workstation gets the same name it had after re-imaging?

I have around 60 workstation that I have labeled with a name. The computers are in a school. I would like to be able to multicast all workstations, and make sure they get the name on the label again.

I do not have much experience with WDS. I remember with RIS that is was possible to attach a mac-->computername file with the deployment. But it's possible that i'm mistaken with novell zen imaging. Which was also a long time ago:)

I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

WDS Multicasting MDT 2010 created SOE

I'm just wondering if the following scenario is possible with the setup we currently have.  The architecture we've implemented is:

  • MDT 2010 on Win2008 R2.  No clients build from this server.
  • Windows 2008 R2 servers with the WDS Transport Server role only.  We have no AD in the environment, so this is what I'm limited to.  Clients connect via PXE to these servers to image, using a WinPE LTI.

Multicast has been setup and configured, and it working successfully for the base OS .wim file only.  Once the client moves further into the task sequence and begins installing additional applications, their traffic falls back to Unicast.

Is it possible to maintain multicast throughout the entire imaging process given this environment and its limitations?

Windows Deployment Server with Update step enabled and Blocking IE11 (Blocker didn't work)

Greetings.

I am experiencing something very strange with our Windows Deployment Servers.

I have WDS 2013 with AIK-8.1 combination server to do our machine deployment. Some of our machines need to have IE11 blocked from installation (for compatibility issue). As in case with IE10 before we installed blocker from microsoft and then captured image. I double checked and the registry keys for the blocker are present in correct location and if I run updates on the machine before capture it doesn't attempt to install IE11.

Problem is during deployment during automatic update step (post application update) the system picks up and installs ie11.

If I remove it by hand after installation is over and run windows update - it's not installed. If I disable auto-update step in installation - and run updates by hand after deployment is finished- then all works as expected and ie11 not installed.

Does anyone else experienced this scenario when blocker doesn't seem to have effect for automated update installation in deployment?

Can't find the users/groups for sharing/security

I have been working on starting setting up two windows 2008 r2 servers. The other day I added groups and users for the company. There are 36 users and groups. Afterwards, I set up a hard drive for each of my 6 departments. I came across a problem when I tried sharing the hard drive and setting the permissions on them. I right-clicked any of the drives -> properties-> sharing ->  Advanced Sharing... -> check box to "Share this folder" -> Permissions -> Add... -> Advanced -> Set the location to the correct place where the groups are and then click Find Now.  Sometimes Windows will bring up a Log-In window for an administrator to log in, I'm already logged in as an administrator. After entering the correct information, another window comes up and says " The following error occurred while using the user name and password you entered: A local error has occurred."

After letting the search finish, the only users that come up are the Built-In ones. No other users or groups appear. If I un-check the built-in from Object Types,  the search tells me there is a local error or the server isn't operational. The same thing happens when I go to the Security tab to add users/groups. Can someone please help me figure out why the users and groups that I've added aren't showing up.
