Issue getting IP address in WdsClient from DHCP server on WDS 2012

Hi there

I have to install new Windows 10 pro images on 175 Lenovo computers. I am trying to use WDS on WS2012 R2. So far I installed WDS role and DHCP server in the same VM and I can capture an image from an another computer ready with all applications that we need, I install also the network drive into the image however I receive the same error message from the client:

WddsClient: An error occurred while obtaining an IP address from the<g class="gr_ gr_802 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="802" id="802">dhcp</g>server. Please check to ensure that there is an operational DHCP server on this network segment.

1. My firewall has those ports open TCP = 135, 5040, 137 to 139 and UDP= 67to 69, 4011, 64001 to 65000

1. I tried this solution also http://broexperts.com/solution-dhcp-error-in-wds-server-2008-r2/ but it doesn't work for me. I replace this all file startnet.cmd.

So I feel stocked right now, so if someone could help, please let me know

Thanks

Minimum permissions to complete WDS installation

We have loaner laptops and when they come back we re-image / refresh them before they are loaned out again. We have a student worker that we would like to have image these laptops using WDS. What permissions / user rights do I need to assign for him to be able to re-image computers using WDS that have existing accounts in Active Directory. I have given his account create computer objects permission for the OU and all descendant computer objects.

Repairing a Windows Installation 2012 R2

Hi,

I have a server which recently applied a batch of updates and it screwed it up, the server doesn't boot and the server recovery environment doesnt have as good repair tools as the client (like system restore for example).

Anyway, the server is a write-off i'll rebuild it, i tried loads of stuff.

I thought with the WIM file format that there was a way i could re-apply that WIM to the disk to restore my system in a non-destructive way (that is, to keep my user settings, configurations, and installed software), is this possible?

in the recovery environment i have used DISM to apply the image to the C drive, but it is now like a basic clean install of windows, it's not joined to the domain, it hasn't kept my local users (yet the profiles are still there under c:\users\), it hasn't kept the computer name or the applications installed (yet such application folders still exist in the c:\program files\ folder).

I am sure there was a way to do some sort of non-destructive repair, it's what some of the repair discs did for vista and windows 7 i am sure by utilizing the dism or imagex and WIM method, but i can't find out how to do that.

Anyone know?

Thanks

Steve

We use KMS to activate windows in our environment. The machine was with windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 10240 x64. This occur on only one machine. We use SCCM 1607 to install machines. This occur after reinstallation of the machine(bare metal).

I'm executing `Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup` as a part of regular maintenance.

It's working fine on Windows 2012r2, but it fails from time to time on Windows 2016.

Here's screenshot with error details:

Any ideas how it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance!

Sysprep Before Or After Cloning A Hyper-V VM

Hi all, I hope you are well.

I am just looking for some advise/best practice on cloning Hyper-V VMs.

The scenario we have is one production VM that we wish to make a clone of, it's an RDS server and we need another.

We are debating two ways of doing the clone and would like to know the advantages/disadvantages and the recommended route.

We intend to use sysprep, but have considered two ways:

- Sysprep the production server, shut it down, clone it, then boot both copies up and set them back up with different hostnames/IPs etc.

- Clone the production server, boot it off of the network, sysprep it, and then join it to the production environment (obviously with a different IP and different hostname for the new one).

I've been tempted with the second option as I don't believe it will mean any changes are made to the production server, so less chance for it to cause issues, however I'm not certain any would like some advise.

Thank you.

MDT LiteTouch capture stalls on "Capturing progress"

All,

This issue has me stumped.

I have a reference image on a virtual machine. I ran the MDT LiteTouch sequence from the VM and everything seems to be going great. The deployment share is on the physical host and I cannot see any issues.

I went to capture my image today and it has stalled at [98%] Capturing progress: 1:12 mins remaining. Running action: Create WIM. I let this run now for 4 hours thinking it would sort itself out but it hasn't budged.

I see where you can check the post-image logs, but I'm not sure where to look for a clue as to what is going on.

This doesn't happen all of the time, but I'd say 1/3 times it gets hung up for no apparent reason. Any ideas on where to start? I'm pretty certain I have all my bases covered as far as properly setting up the sysprep and capture task sequence. When I boot using the LiteTouch.vbs script, I get a prompt for specifying user credentials - I always specify local admin credentials for the deployment share/machine and that doesn't seem to give me issues.

Any pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I installed the latest update for Win10 but afterwards, got error message that windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 was not working with suggestion to reinstall. Tried that but got an error that a necessary .dll file was missing. Tried downloading& installing Mobile Device Center 6.1 but got a message that it was only compatible with Vista. Now I cannot use File Explorer to access files on my phone; message says the device has either been disconnected or has stopped responding. Any suggestions?

Adding Local Admin to windows 10 without getting "This App cant open"

Has anyone figured out how to add local admin through gpo and have it work right on windows 10.

Prier to windows 10, I would Create a new GPO and in the Computer Configuration go to Windows Settings > Restricted Groups. Add the new Local Admin group ( Domain Users) then make this a member of Administrators. and all would be fine, and this would allow user the ability to install software.

But now in Windows 10 this causes major problems and you get the error: This App Can't Open: .... cant be opened using the Built-in Administrator account. Sign on with a different account.

Has anyone figured this out yet?

I am getting ready to install a new server 2016 and upgrade the workstations to windows 10, but until I get fix for this I cant move forward.

Also, tired of all permission errors, I am logged into a workstation as Administrator, copy files get permission error, pasting files, permission error. etc...

Also, cant get to my servers when I type: \\server\c$

Server 2016 Using unattend.xml with a sysprep'd image

$

Good Day,

I have a hyper-v image which I have run sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown on. From doing some reading it seems that all I should need to do is put my unattend.xml file in the \panther directory and when that image boots up, it should automagically use the settings in that file.

The problem is that's not happening. Does anyone know if something is different for server 2016 or what I might check? I use that sysprep'd image as a template image and use PowerShell to copy it out, add the rest of the Hyper-V settings I need, mount the image, inject the .xml, then dismount and start the server up.

Anyone got this working?

Cheers
John

KMS activation is failing for several machines

I have a number of machines (servers and workstations) that are failing when I try to activate them using our KMS server.

The server has been running fine for over a year but recently has been failing activation of our Windows machines.

I can update license status and even install a product key remotely but when I try to activate the same machine it fails...

"No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted." The event log show the attempt and nothing else.

Pretty much the same thing happens when I try to activate a machine from it's cmd prompt... "slmgr /ato" fails with error 0xC004F074 ..."The Key Management Service (KMS) is unavailable"

KMS and WMI rules are enabled in Windows firewall on both machines

KMS Server = Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 64bit

target server = Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64bit

Windows Server 2016 Standard x64, I recently installed the latest update.

A refresh setup from the RTM image, there's some options in the Settings - Recovery page.

However, after I installed all the latest updates, that page is empty.

Is this normal?

Domain Setup

We are looking at setting up a remote office for our current office.

Remote Office will not have connectivity to our FSMO servers or the HQ Primary site for 4~6 months.

What we are looking at is if we can send a copy of our Domain controller to the site and setup an office with some primary services.

Services we are looking at to setup is a local DNS, DHCP, File and Print, SCCM, local Mcafee Solutions and some technical applications. Can the site work without a connectivity and Sync to HQ office were we have our FSMO DCs located?

My understanding was a non sync with PDC and other DCs for a longer duration like 4-6 months will create lot operational issues.

WDS 2012 Image Capture - Stuck at 50% "Capturing Windows image metadata..."

$

I have tried capturing a few images after running sysprep, and they are getting stuck at 50% completion, never moving past after hours of waiting. "Capturing Windows image metadata...". If I look on the WDS server I see that the file hasn't been modified since it was actually capturing and moving the progress bar.

Has anyone ever experienced this, or have any ideas of how to troubleshoot?

Thank you!

WDS on 2008 R2 - working with UEFI systems but not with BIOS based systems -> 0xc0000098, The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry

$

Hi there,

I'm trying to set up a multipurpose PXE environment using WDS for demo purposes and debugging something a customer is trying to do.

There's multiple issues here I'm afraid. One being I'm unable to install Windows via PXE on BIOS systems (works fine with UEFI), the other that I want it to boot more than just Windows and thus want to work with pxelinux (or ipxe) as well.

Created a VM that has 2008 R2, is a domain controller for it's own domain, runs DHCP (using option 60 thus, not 66/67) and has WDS on it. Imported Windows 10 boot image and install image. Tried booting a VM over PXE. It loads the initial file but then stops with

File: \Boot\BCD

Status: 0xc0000098

Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry.

Have the same issue with Windows 7 images. Do note I used a 64-bit ISO in all cases. Should be fine as far as I'm aware, all systems are 64-bit nowadays. My test systems sure are.

This error occurs when using BIOS thus (both physical and VM's). Systems utilizing UEFI (both physical and VM's) boot and install Windows 7 and 10 just fine from it.

Any suggestions on this one? Already removed WDS once and recreated the whole thing. Doesn't make a difference.

----

The second issue is with pxelinux. It seems hard to boot this. According to several guides on the internet you should just configure the default boot image to be pxelinux.com. This doesn't work. Not on BIOS nor UEFI systems. Output from wdsutil does show they're the default:

Boot Program Policy:

Known client PXE prompt policy: OptIn

New client PXE prompt policy: OptIn

Allow N12 for new clients: <Not Applicable>

Architecture discovery: Disabled (it used to be enabled, disabled to see if things would change)

Reset boot program: No

Default boot programs:

 x86 - boot\x86\pxelinux.com

 x64 - boot\x86\pxelinux.com

 ia64 - boot\ia64\bootmgfw.efi

Default N12 boot programs:

 x86 - boot\x86\pxelinux.com

 x64 - boot\x86\pxelinux.com

 ia64 - boot\ia64\bootmgfw.efi

Even though the settings point to pxelinux.com PXE insists on booting wdsnbp.com. Well on BIOS that is, can't actually see the filename flash by on my UEFI systems and they don't boot the same thing.

Eventually I got fed up trying to get it to work by using the settings and I just move the original wdsnbp.com to wdsnbp.0 and copied pxelinux.0 to wdsnbp.com. I can boot PXElinux now, well, from BIOS systems at least. Can load WDS by chaining wdsnbp.0, breaks with the same 0x0c0000098 message so I suppose, besides the regular boot error, that didn't break anything.

UEFI systems however still boot directly into WDS. As far as I know ia64 was an architecture by Intel for servers that was hardly used and is dying out, might play with changing those files though.

If anyone has any insights on how to make it boot pxelinux by default (without having to move the regular files out of the way) and why the Windows installation doesn't work with BIOS (it already didn't before I started modifying files and boot programs - first tried to get that running, errors haven't changed though so I doubt it's getting in the way) it would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Screen resolution when PXE boot from WDS vs Install Windows 8.1 from USB

$

Hi all

I own a Lenovo ThinkPad T430s, X230 Tablet, and now have my hands on a T440. All three machines have UEFI Secure Boot enabled properly, i.e. Windows boot screen shows Lenovo logo instead of Windows logo.

However, if I do a PXE boot (using Windows Deployment Services from Windows Server 2012, not R2) and boot to the same boot.wim provided on a Windows 8.1 ISO image, the boot screen resolution turns crap, and the WinPE environment runs in 640x480. Also, as opposed to the Lenovo logo showing on the boot screen, the Windows logo shows up instead, indicating it's not doing a secure boot?

When booting from a USB stick however, using the same Windows 8.1 boot.wim (copied from ISO), the screen resolution in Windows Setup is detected correctly, and the Lenovo logo shows up.

This occurs on all three machines since MDT was upgraded to MDT 2013 or when I replaced Windows 8 boot.wim with Windows 8.1 boot.wim (as the Windows ADK 8 --> ADK 8.1).

Is there a fix for this? Do others have the same problem elsewhere?

Many thanks :smileyhappy:
