Pending Device Error: Windows Deployment Services failed to generate a computer name for the device.

Hi,

I have a new error that I'm not sure how to fix. Hopefully someone can help me.

The PCs on our network must be approved in WDS before deployment and we normally right-click > Approve the machines for deployment; however, that has suddenly stopped working for every machine. We now have to go through the Name and Approve right-click menu option.

Error Message we see says:
Pending Device Error: Windows Deployment Services failed to generate a computer name for the device.

What happened here? Did WDS run out of names? Should I reset something?

WDS Standalone - no boot files for the x64uefi

Hi,

I ran into a strange issue with the WDS as it failed to create files for the x64uefi architecture.

I have done following but still same issue

1. Remove the WDS role

2. Remove the old RemoteInstall folder and create a new one (even on a separate partition).

3. Reinstalled the OS, this time everything should be defaults, but unfortunately, same result.

4. Permissions: I am using default Administrator account, so no issues with permissions.

5. Boot.WIM (its PE 1809 image, which was used on a different machine without issues). I can still boot a client in legacy boot mode but failed with UEFI boot (as WDS failed to create boot files for this architecture).

Any thoughts?

Hi everyone, hope you can help me.

I have a Windows Server 2019 with WDS role

It was working perfectly with many virtual and physical machines for Windows deployment.

Suddenly without changing anything it stopped working and now machines (virtual or physical) get stuck at the start of the loading bar and then display this error:

Status: 0xc0000001

Info: A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

I've already tried reinstalling WDS role and shared file

Network boot EFI client using WDS on Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi,

I just installed WDS on Windows server 2008 R2. I have the DHCP server and WDS on the same system. I have configured WDS and added the x64 boot and install images. I am trying to network boot an x64 efi based client. The client successfully obtains a DHCP address. Now, in the network trace, I observe that the first file to be downloaded is always the wdsmgfw.efi file.

1. Initially, I added the Windows 2008 SP2 boot image. The boot\x64\ folder did not have the wdsmgfw.efi file and TFTP request would fail.

2. I added the Windows 2008 R2 boot image. This created the wdsmgfw.efi file in the boot\x64\ folder. Now the TFTP download succeeds. Then I end up with a black screen.

I made the"bootmgfw.efi" the default boot program for x64 systems. Even then, the TFTP request is always for "wdsmgfw.efi". What is the wdsmgfw.efi file for? Is this being requested by the client? I got a feeling that if the bootmgfw.efi file is downloaded, I will be able to install and boot properly.

Do I need to set any option? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi

I've got previous experience automating windows installs before (desktop and server) but I'm stumped with this one issue with 2016.

I can't seem to automate the OS selection window, This one...

< not able to upload images but its the OS selection windows within the windows setup >

Here is my code snippet from my Autounattended.xml

I've tried using /image/name & /image/index

<ImageInstall>
    <OSImage>
        <InstallFrom>
           <MetaDatawcm:action="add">
               <Key>/IMAGE/NAME</Key>
               <Value>Windows Server 2016 Standard (Desktop Experience)</Value>
           </MetaData>
        </InstallFrom>
        <InstallTo>
           <DiskID>0</DiskID>
           <PartitionID>2</PartitionID>
        </InstallTo>
    </OSImage>
</ImageInstall>

I used dism to confirm the image name

my iso is

SW_DVD9_Win_Svr_STD_Core_and_DataCtr_Core_2016_64Bit_English_-3_MLF_X21-30350.ISO

Anyone else seem this or can offer a share of what you use in your unattended file?

Thanks

Windows WDS correct setup

Hello WDS Forum

I work in a datacenter where we service alot of customers.
I want to create a WDS server for easy deployment of customer pc's

Every computer we order comes with a Windows OEM licens.
While researching WDS i read that you need a Windows MAK key or VL (same thing?) to deploy computers with WDS.

Is this necessary or can we just pxe boot the computers with default windows 10 image?

Our goal is to make it faster to deploy computers via PXE boot, and also make it possible to make some settings like computername, admin password and program installation.

Server 2016 Datacenter Setup & Licensing for multiple Server 2016 VM's

Is there documentation of the proper setup and configuration for Server 2016 Datacenter for multiple VM activation's?

Our physical machine, (two processors, 6-cores each, One 16-Core Datacenter license to cover) with the Hypervisor installed.

Server-1 would be the first Server 2016 VM as the AD controller.  Then there will be many other Server 2016 virtual machines with various rolls (i.e. Server-2, Server-3, etc...)

My question is: How do I set this machine up for the Datacenter license to cover all the VM's licensing/activation?

I have come across where I would setup something with KMS? or AVMA (automatic virtual machine activation)...

OR, do I have to start with Server 2016 Datacenter installed on the "root" (boot OS) with the Hyper-V roll added?

Windows Storage Server 2012 Standard reinstall - no media

Hi there, I'm looking to see if anyone has a link to download 2012 Storage Server Standard.  We have an OEM license (afffixed to the machine) and we need to reinstall.

The OEM is no help, and we don't have a support contract with microsoft.  On the phone, they've told me that I need to speak with OAS to get a download link (~$500) but the license itself costs nearly that, and we're a small shop...

I've been kicked between about 7 departments on the phone and no one seems able to help.  We're getting pretty frustrated that we can't get media to reinstall a product we paid for.  We tried installing the trial, but when we attempt to activate with our license key, it says that the eval edition can't be upgraded using our key.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer on this.

Here we go again.

The MSDN download for Windows Server Version 1903, will not accept to actiave with the MAK keys posted on the MSDN site.

We had the same issue with Windows Server version 1809 until Microsoft updated the keys with new ones.

So can someone pleas put the correct MAK keys on the MSDN site for the Windows Server Version 1903 Standard and Datacenter Editions.

Unattend file being ignored after updating WIM via VHDX

$

I feel I'm going crazy. I've done this a million times before and now its no longer working.

Problem:
I'm trying to update the wim with the new SCCM Client (have to due to it being a nested WIM File within a server deployment) along with updating the Windows Updates on it.

I have an Unattend.xml file which includes server name and IP address and the below process works using one of our existing WIM's.

1. Create the VHDX from the WIM:

    Convert-WindowsImage -SourcePath "E:\path\VMWIM.wim" -Size 100GB -DiskType Dynamic -VHDFormat VHDX -VHDPartitionStyle GPT -VHDPath "E:\path\VMWIM.vhdx"

2. Mount VHDX:

    Mount-WindowsImage -ImagePath "E:\path\VMWIM.vhdx" -Path E:\path\Mount -Index 1

3. Create WIM:

    New-WindowsImage -CapturePath E:\TempVHD\Mount -Name VMWIM -ImagePath E:\TempVHD\VMWIMv3.4.wim -Description "Server 2012 R2 VMWIM" -Verify

4. Create VM from above WIM:

    C:\path\Convert-WindowsImage.ps1 -WIM C:\path\VMWIM.wim -Size 100GB -DiskType Dynamic -VHDFormat VHDX -VHDPartitionStyle GPT -Unattend C:\unattend.xml -VHD D:\path\vmvhd.vhdx

When I do the above the Unattend.xml and Specialize Settings (Name, IP, DNS, WINS) are all applied.

If I were to make changes to the VHDX Created in Step 1, change SCCM Client, run Windows Updates, then I'd run a sysprep with shutdown and carry on with step 2. Once I got to Step 4 the vhdx file is created and windows boots, but the specialize section is ignored (Name, IP, DNS, WINS). Even though I can see the unattend.xml has been copied to c:\unattend.xml and c:\windows\panther\unattend.xml (using exactly the same unattend file)

What am I doing wrong?

Migration programming error???

Has anyone else had problems migrating AD from an SBS2003 to SBS2008. I found that on the 2008 server the email addresses had been set up using the 'user name logon' field instead of the 'email address' field. Normally this would not be a problem as the username is the first part of the email  address but for this particular company they have there username reversed so instead of first initial.username they have it username.first initial for the email address. Anyone else found this or had this problem is there a way to fix this or is it a programming issue

Custom progress messages during OOBE and setupcomplete?

Is there a way to display a custom progress message during unattend/OOBE?

Specifically, I'm thinking of a message displayed like the "getting devices ready" that I could show during tasks like setupcomplete.cmd or RunSynchronousCommand steps.

Has anyone done something like this?

how to configure WDS to accept UEFI boot clients

$
0
0

Hello.

We are trying to get SCCM setup in our environment. We currently use a stand-alone WDS server, and using legacy boot options a client will successfully connect and pull an image. Our newest computers are UEFI only, however, and they will not connect to that same server.

It seems like this is a server issue, not a network issue as someone else here manages a K1000 server, and that server can handle both legacy *and* UEFI based clients simply by creating a new boot partition on the server itself. No network changes needed.

That makes me think that the network support for both legacy and UEFI are the same, and it's a server configuration issue.
