WDS - Do Not Join the Client to a Domain
How to configure Server 2012 R2 Essentials and NOT have it a DC or in a Domain
I currently have a Dell PowerEdge 840 server running Server 2008 R2. It is NOT in a domain. All computers and this server are a member of "Workgroup".
I'm now upgrading to a new Dell T110 Server. I purchased Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials to avoid having to pay licensing for every 5 users. (Small Animal Clinic with 20 workstations). The only purpose for this server is to host the clinic's billing/scheduling database (Avimark).
I don't want to mess around with creating a Domain and/or Domain Controller. This business is too small for something like this. So what is the best way to configure this server so that it is NOT on a domain, and the system does not prompt me with the configuration wizard asking me to create a domain? I want it to be a member of "Workgroup" like the other computers in the office so I can just swap out the new for the old server.
I'm just hoping someone has a simple process that I can follow. Thanks!
Ken
2012 WDS but there are no SCP objects
Hi,
So I have been having a bit of trouble removing domain admin rights from my local deployment staff that use Windows Deployment Services.
I gave their domain accounts the right to make computer accounts and change computer properties, I also gave them full admin rights on the WDS machine and also over the AD Object. I even tried modifying the registry for the PXE devices user from the default setting of Domain Admin.
But they keep getting permission errors when trying to modify pre-authorized devices or authorize any pending devices.
I keep reading that I need to delegate them full control over the SCP object under the WDS server object, but it is not there (no Remote Install Tab either)
I checked adsiedit as well as view > advanced features & show AD objects as containers.
There is a Technet article that says I should restart the WDSService as it is meant to create the SCP object when the service starts and continues by making sure the server can access the domain controllers (which it can).
All of my WDS servers are VM's running in a vSphere environment. When the user is a domain admin, there is no problem.
If there something different with 2012 R2? Or is it that they are running on VM's? I can't imaging that being an issue though as it works perfectly except for the SCP issue.
WDS Over Wireless LAN
Hi
We're trying to deploy WDS system and were able to do it over LAN.
Trying to do the same over Wireless LAN was failed.
Is the WDS support WLAN as well or it's not supported today?

IIS server on Windows Server 2012 not opening a website
I have Windows Server 2012 and SQL Express 2014 running on it. I set up IIS on it and uploaded my website as well as the database.
My problem is that when I try to navigate to the page it automatically gives me /cms/holding.html (gives me this holding.html) page but the landing page does exist so I am lost as to what can be wrong.
The credentials on the config file of the website has all the correct information. If someone could help that would be much appreciated, or at least point me to the right direction.
sysprep not resetting administrator password
when using sysprep /generalize to template my virtual machines, it is not resetting the administrator password, it is leaving it set to what it was originally.
syspreop log shows " [shsetup] CleanupAdministratorPassword: NetUserSetInfo(1003) failed (0x800708c5) [gle=0x000003e5]"
I have already followed the suggestions here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserversetup/thread/fb5dea3a-3e36-4c47-a22d-12463f5c203c/
but they did not help.
I have done several clean windows installations with the same issue.

Window Server 2008R2-ISS7 can't run .aspx webapp.
I am trying to run my .aspx web app on IIS 7 where it perfectly runs the default page (default.aspx), but clicking on other links gives me an error:
Error HTTP 404.0 - Not Found
I don't know if I need to turn on/off any configurations, or setup anything. I am new at this. This is webserver with Window Server 2008 R2 Operating System, and I don't know if I need to install any other role. Any help would be greatly appreciated by me.

recommended partition setup for server 2012 R2 web server
Hi All, I've been searching the web not really found answer.
I'm setting up a new server 2012 R2, it will be used for logging data via TCP/IP packets into a sql database with a web app to view the data.
Its not a busy server, at most 20 concurrent web users.
2x1TB drives config as RAID 1
The question, what is the best partition schema.
a: 1 partition for OS, Web App and sql DB
b: 2 partitions, one for OS and another for data. and should the web app be on the OS or data partition?
c: 3 partitions, one for each OS, Database and Web app
thanks in advance,
Regards Stephen

WDS adds computer accounts that are not needed
I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 with the WDS role for serving boot images, and MDT 2013 for rolling out clients.
WDS is set to server known and unknown clients, but unknown clients need to be approved first. (switching from SCCM to MDT, and starting with a clean database with MDT).
It seems that when using that option it automatically creates a computer account in AD.
But that's useless as I don't use WDS to load a image. I have MDT for that, which also adds the computer to the AD.
Therefore, the added computer account by WDS is left behind in the Computers OU. Counting up to the licenses.
Is there a way to prevent creating those computer accounts or do I have to manually remove the computer accounts each time a new computer is added to WDS/MDT?
This topic addresses the issue as well, but provides no solution.
Thanks in advance.
hide Windows installation options from other architectures
HI there,
I've been asked to look into setting up a standalone MDT/WDS server to deploy Windows Images. Setting it up and getting it to work was no problem but I've run into the following issue.
I've loaded three boot.wim images into WDS : Windows 7 x86, Windows 7 x64 and Windows 10 x64.
I've made three image groups : Windows 7 x86, Windows 7 x64 and Windows 10 x64, each containing their corresponding install.wim images.
When I boot a client PC into PXE I will see three options for installation, namely the three boot images. When for example I choose to load the Windows 7 x86 boot image the installation will start normal and I can finish a Windows 7 x86 installation without hassle but during the OS selection screen I will also see every other install image : every Windows 7 x64 and Windows 10 x64 are listed.
Is there any way to hide these options during the installation process ? for neatness sake I would like to see only the installation options corresponding to the selected boot image
In WDS, does it really work while joining domain unattended with JoinRights set to JoinOnly?
I've been experimenting with Windows Deployment Services on Windows Server 2012 R2, trying to deploy a Server Core and join it to a domain unattended.
However, when performing Unsecure Join, the "test-user" can only succeed when JoinRights is set to Full with the following command:
WDSUTIL /Set-Device /Device:test-wds-client /JoinRights:Full /User:test-user
Whereas setting JoinRights to JoinOnly will always result in failure 0x80070005, i.e. access denied. As the WDSUTIL doc says,
JoinOnly requires the administrator to reset the computer account before the user can join the computer to the domain.
I've reset the computer account in both the WDS MMC console and the Active Directory Users and Computers, but neither way worked.
Inspecting the computer account, its ACL has 2 more deny ACEs for "test-user" in the beginning, when JoinRights is set to JoinOnly compared to Full. One ACE is changing the password and the other is resetting the password.
Therefore, with these deny ACEs it seems to be impossible for "test-user" to join the computer to the domain. Is my interpretation correct?
Switch WDS Standalone mode on 2012 R2 to Integrated Active Directory
Hello !
Our company is in the proccess of migrating from one domain to another.
Since it might take a while to complete the migration, we would like to first implement a WDS in Standalone mode and later on switch to the WDS server to Active Directory Integrated mode in the new domain.
Does anyone know if it is an easy thing to do ? Would we have to reinstall the role completely ? If that's the case, isn't too much work to reconfigure the new AD integrated WDS almost as identicaly as the standalone WDS ?
Thank you for you answers !

windows 10 pro upgrade from windows 7 pro
After the installation which looked flawless, systems running perfect i found the Raid 5 controller no longer shows installed. System has a Z77 intel chipset for raid 5. You have a suggestion on how to proceed?
I also recommend adding in a check in the windows install prior to upgrading if the system contains a raid with a windows 10 compliant driver and control area.
