Windows Server 2008 Repair Install

I have a Windows Server 2008 64bit Enterprise server that won't boot into Windows anymore and I would like to perform a "repair install" like in Windows 2003 but I can't seem to find the option.

Does anyone know how I can just install the binaries overtop so I retain all my existing data and programs?

Thanks.

Issues with WDS Capture image after injecting network driver

I am trying to get a WDS server setup and running and am running into an issue when trying to create a capture image with a network driver. If I boot the system from a standard capture image, with no network driver, I can get into the WinPE environment without any issues but cannot connect to the WDS server because of the lack of a network driver. If I manually add the driver after booting from the capture image it works fine.

I decided that I would try to inject the driver into the capture image using the WDS so that it would automatically load when booting and I wouldn't have to do it manually. When booting from the capture image with the injected network driver, I see the Windows loading screen for a few seconds and then it goes to a blank screen. I have tried this on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016 Tech Preview 3. I have tried with the boot.wim from Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10, using the appropriate network driver for each one.

I know that I have the correct network drivers because if I load them manually from a standard capture image, they work fine. Has anyone else run into this?

Hi,

When installing Patch MS08-052 Microsoft GDI+ WMF CVE-2008-3014 on Microsoft Server 2008 R2 I got "The update is not applicable on your computer".

I found the above update for Windows Server 2008 but i didn't find the same update for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Could anyone help me how to find the same Patch for Windows Server 2008 R2??

Many Thanks.

Windows 2008 R2 as a Workgroup Server

This is a very basic question, but my server guy insists Windows Server can only be configured as a domain server.  I have found many discussions here and in other places talking about configuring it as a workgroup, but I need a definitive answer I can take back to him.  Is it possible to configure a Windows 2008 R2 Server Standard as part of a Workgroup with no domain?

The users have two applications with databases that need the databases centralized, some file sharing, and only 5 computers connected internally with 2 full time and 3 part time remote users (the three part time are among the 5 computers in the office).  They want to keep it as simple as possible, there are no big security threats/requirements and everyone is trusted by everyone else.

They did get a copy of Remote Desktop, but the debate is still going on whether they need it or not.

I know a fair bit about Windows and I'm a Windows programmer (C++), but I haven't worked with NT Server since NT 4 so I've very out of date.  All the work I do is with the workstation versions of Windows (industrial computers for the most part).

Windows Server 2012 r1 to R2 upgrade failing Error 3211266

I run the setup from an ISO mounted on the D:\ (Iso is fine as i have upgraded 4 servers already)

Select 'Install Now' Option on the Windows setup window.

The setup starts with 'Setup is copying Temporary Files' then moves to 'Setup is Starting' and quickly reverts back to the Windows setup window with the 'Install Now' option. This is a never ending loop.

So after some searching i came accross starting the install using the command line below.

setup.exe /HideWelcome /uilanguage:en-US /targetlanguage:en-US /runlocal

Now the setup starts and goes through the windows Update option and then i select the version i require to install(2012 R2 Datacenter with GUI). I accept the licence terms and choose to 'Upgrade'.

The copying windows files goes by and then every time it fails at 20% on 'Collecting files, settings and applications' with an error that reads: 'Setup cant continue. Restart the computer and restart the setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates.'

I did check and the updates are all up to date.

The Setupact.log shows InstallWindows: Error Type = 3211266

Any advice?

SPLA License Agreement question

My organization is looking at getting into an SPLA agreement for our Server OS licensing. My question is as part of an SPLA agreement do we still receive MAK/KMS keys that we use to activate our installs?

WDS fails to build UEFI client with error code 0x102

Hi,

I'm running WDS on Server 2008R2 SP1.  It's on the same subnet as my Microsoft DHCP server and Domain Controller.  I'm attempting to build a UEFI virtual machine.  When it pxe boots it gets an IP address, connects to the WDS server and downloads wdsmgfw.efi.  It then tries to contact the WDS server for a couple minutes and ends with the message "Windows Deployment Services encountered an error:"  Error Code:0x102 as shown below...

Looking at a network trace on the WDs server while the client is trying to contact the WDS server I see repeated DHCP requests to port 4011 immediately followed by the WDS server contacting the domain controller as though it's looking for permission to start the build process or something.  My client IP is 192.168.2.5, the WDS server IP is 192.168.2.10, and the domain controller's IP is 192.168.2.3.

The trace is shown below...

My DHCP options include 66 (IP of wds server), 67 (boot\x64\wdsmgfw.efi), and 003 (IP of gateway/router).  The wdsmgfw.efi file came from a Windows 2012R2 boot.wim.  I've also tried eliminating options 66 and 67 but then the client won't download the wdsmgfw.efi file.  If I set option 60 to PXEClient it won't download the wdsmgfw.efi file either.

WDS is configured to respond to all client computers (known or unknown).
WDS is configured to respond to not join computers to the domain.
WDS is configured to respond to not listen on port 67 - although I've tried listening without success as well.
WDS is configured as authorized in DHCP - although I've tried unathorized without success as well.

I can build non-uefi servers just fine.
If I use a WDS server running on Windows 2012R2 I can build just fine but I really don't want to upgrade all my WDS servers if I don't have to.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on here?  Why would my WDS server be reaching out to my domain controller instead of just presenting my boot images?  Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Windows PE failures.

Hello all,

I have been trying my best to setup a WDS server. I am able to successfully PXE boot and install windows (I have tested with 7 and 8.1). Unfortunately, I am unable to successfully leverage an answer file with Windows PE.. I am currently attempting to test my install against a Dell T3400 using Windows 7.

This is the error log that I get everytime:

MDT 2013 Download link is broken and request about MDT 2013 Update 1

MDT 2013 download link is broken

The official MDT 2013 download link is broken, see the below for further information:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dn475741.aspx https://www.microsoft.com/library/errorpages/smarterror.aspx

As you can see the page/file for MDT 2013 can't be found, hence the "not found" 404 error. Please restore the link, so we can download MDT 2013 again.

In addition I would like to know if the Official (non preview/beta) Update 1 for MDT 2013 have been released, as I can't verify it on the MDT download page.

Thank you.

WDS - How to automatically assign a hostname (AD) during the deployment

$

Hello,

I'm deploying images to several computers with WDS. But i can't give automatically a hostname defined in my AD. I always have a random hostname.

However all computers are prestaged with the hostname mac address with others tuning.
In my unattended file : <ComputerName>*</ComputerName> as described on documentations.

The new image is well joined with my AD but with a random name :(

Is it possible to give the good hostname during the deployment?

Thanks for your help.

Windows Licensing

I have a basic question on Windows licensing, I am procuring the server hardware with Windows server OS. The key is already pasted on the server hardware.

By default what type of license is this?

I will configure this server as domain controller? What type of license should I procure?

Transfer FSMO Roles from SBS 2008

We are migrating from SBS 2008 to Server 2012 Std.

I have read quite a bit about migrations and keep seeing the 21-day grace period from the time FSMO roles are transferred until the SBS will start to shutdown.

Does this still apply for my migration scenario above?

If so, can I transfer roles back to stop 21-day timer?

Black screen after PXE boot and brief windows progress bar

$

Hello All,

I am relatively new to WDS in 2012 R2. I have worked with various PXE environments before, though.

I have configured a boot image in WDS and from there I have attached a specific driver (through trial and error) to boot a Dell Optiplex 9020 desktop and run through the installation process. No problems there. I have finished my gold image build and I am ready to capture the desktop after running sysprep.

I used the boot image to create a capture image and also applied the same NIC driver which has worked for the setup, to the capture image. When I select the capture option from the boot menu, a windows progress bar is displayed for a second and then the screen goes black and nothing else is displayed at all. The desktop continues to run.

I have overcome the 0xc00000f error by attaching the driver to the capture image and have also used dism to mount and commit the image file changes to switch it to read/write (as I understand it).

I am now at a loss as I am unable to capture the sysprep'd workstation. Can anyone offer any advice?

I have checked the event log and filtered it for all information related to Windows Deployment Services, but I need more detail from an actual session establishment to identify what could be going wrong. Where can I locate such logs?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I would like to know how to setup custom message for prevention of software installation via group policy in windows server 2012 R2.

I have published few software's in my domain from a distribution point and i have setup software restriction policies for few of them. But i do not want the below default message to come up:

" The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation. this installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator."

Instead i would like to setup a custom message. Please advise how i can achieve the same using group policy, if not available what are the alternatives i can use.

WDS Images can't be uploaded to a WDS Server

Hello

I have a really annoying problem. I created a few Windows 10 Pro reference VMs for capturing images for my WDS. When I boot of a capture image everything works fine, except: I can't upload the image to my WDS. I can ping it through cmd. I also get an IP from my DHCP. I just can't authenticate on the Windows 2012 R2 Server.

With my Windows 7 Images it worked perfectly.. No problems with uploading the Images.

WDS is on a x64 2012 R2 VM running on ESXI 6.0 U1. The reference machines are also running on the same ESXi host. The VMs are runnign Win 10 x64 Pro Edition with the latest Updates.

as we knw that during remote installation service only one drive is  created which is "c:" where all the system files and windows files are stored and no space left for other drive creation ,like if you have 80gb HD it will occupied full space . is there any way to assign or creating partition automatically during wds installation say that C: drive is creating  along with d: drive As well as e: drive also created .
