Windows 8 not picking up embedded product key when installed with WDS

$

Ok so here is my setup.

Server 2008 R2, running WDS and serving various images.

the Windows 8 image is a vanilla boot.wim and install.wim imported from a system builder iso.

If I burn the ISO or extract it onto a USB drive, then the install process picks up the embedded Windows product keys no problem.

If I deploy the same thing via WDS, the setup wizard asks for the keys, ergo, is not picking them up from the UEFI firmware. Is this an inherent limitation of WDS or am I doing something wrong?

Setting up a client based configurtion for WDS deployment

Hello,

Basically what I'm trying to setup is a fully automated WDS deployment, I've finished up the required image and I can now deploy it through WDS with just one manual action which is changing the password (I can't seem to find the option to disable this)

So what I'm trying to setup is a simple html page that we can use to fill in the IP information, network information, hostname ect.
Once filled in it should create some sort of file that wds picks up.
We have to be able to install multiple desktop at once so changing the unattend file constantly isn't really an option.

Working with an setupcomplete.cmd file doesns't seem to be an option as well, it would've been an option if WDS would pick up just a certain filename (let's say we use the MAC address in the filename)

I hope someone here has any idea's!

Thanks,

Sander

Multicast WDS Imaging Not Working - Doesn't show up when booted via PXE..?

I have a lab environment setup specifically for imaging laptops via WDS.   I have a stand alone Windows 2012 server connected directly to an 8-Port Cisco SG-220 8 Port switch.    Nothing else is connected to this server and it is not being used for anything else.  The server is running DHCP and WDS.    I can boot laptops via PXE and connect to the WDS server to deploy the images through standard WDS imaging.  However, I have not been able to get Multicasting to work.  I have never used Multicasting before and have read through the documentation but must be missing something.  This is what I've done:

1. In the WDS server I right click on my deployment image and select 'create multicast image' then go through the prompts to create an auto-cast image.

2. The Multicast image is created and shown as 'waiting' on the WDS server.

3. The Cisco router is brand new out of the box, the only configuration I did was to enable IGMP snooping.  I did not make any other changes to the setup of the switch.

4. I boot a target machine via PXE using the same Boot Image that I always use.  It loads to the screen where I can select the image I want to deploy but it never shows the multicast image as an option.  I only see the regular image I had previously been using.

I'm not sure what else I'm missing in order to get the target machine to connect and image using the multicast image.

Here are a few screen shots of what I have setup:

Here is the multicast image created on the server

Here is the Cisco Router configuration:

Here is the NIC card configuration on the server:

WDS Server 2012 r2: Windows cannot install required files.

Hello all:

I have WDS set up on my Server 2012 r2 Standard server.  I was able to use WDS to capture an image on a Windows 8.1 Pro machine and it captured and deployed just fine.  I then moved on to my next build which was a Windows 7 x86 machine.  The capture worked just fine however during deployment, I get the error message: "Windows cannot install required files.  Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation."

I have read many forum posts and how-tos on the subject suggesting the .wim or RES.rwm were corrupted, retook the image to fix the issue with the same result.  I have read that the image group may be corrupted, backed up my images, deleted, and recreated the image group then imported my image again with the same result.  I have tried multicasting and unicasting.  I have tried this on multiple machines in case there were hardware level issues (i.e. bad ram, etc).  I cannot get this image to deploy and I am truly frustrated over this.

Anyone have any guidance at all?

Thanks,

Ron

How do I get my unattended installation to install additional applications?

Hi,

I'm relatively new to Windows - having spent more time with Linux so perhaps I'm not thinking the right way.

I'm trying to find a way to get Autounattend.xml to also install other things - things that I'd like to include in my base image. I'm struggling to find any good documentation which explains how I can do this in an automated way.

There's a lot about booting up post setup to allow manual install and configure the system and then do a sysprep to prepare it for use as a clone. However there's nothing on how to have applications automatically installed.

Is there something I've missed?

My desire is to remove as much manual work as possible to ensure that my server config can be checked into source control and easily re-run.

Thanks in advance for your help.

WDS Capture Will Not Proceed More Than 1%.

I have had issues for the past week getting the deployment server to recognize an HP EliteOne 800. At first, I was receiving an error x000000f. There was no activity whatsoever. Next, I injected the drivers (even though I had already created the Capture Image from a perfectly fine Instal WIM.) After we injected the drivers, we proceeded to just have a black screen without ever seeing the Capture Wizard. I went back and created a capture image on Server 2008 and then imported it to the new deployment Server that is 2012.

As things looked more hopeful, Server 2012 has since booted the Capture Wizard, but the Task Progress will not proceed past 1%. We are trying to Capture  Windows 7 Enterprise on Server 2012. I am not really sure how to troubleshoot this one since we have injected the drivers, created images on separate servers, and tried to force it in the cmd line.

Any suggestions?

Re-installed Windows on a server that had been activated. Won't activate, says MAK has reached its limit.

I work for a company that doesn't give us Windows Disks and Keys.  The central IT group develops standard images, which have an MAK baked in, and gives us those canned images to use.

I had a server that was running, nice and happy, from one of these images.  Windows was successfully activated, and life was good.

I had to divert this server to run some experiments with Linux.  When those experiments were concluded, I reinstalled my Windows image on this server.  I tried to activate it online from the baked-in key, and it failed, with an error to the effect that 'the Multi-Activation Key has reached its limit'.

I tried to use the 'call Microsoft on the phone and walk through the activation manually', but clicjing that link from the activation screen tries to bring up Internet Explorer, which is not on this system as this is a 'secured baseline'.  System doesn't have Java, either, which I think is required for those pages.

I already have a ticket open with my company, but while I'm waiting for them to get back to me, I thought I'd check here and see if anyone has any ideas.

Version is Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard Edition with SP1.

one of the machines came up but with a very old version of it  ...  i tried to import it again but it needed the checkpoints related to it

by search i knew that the check points are on the c:\program files \hyper v etc ... which is deleted because i installed a new windows

what can i do now to get the machine to work with its most recent version .... i ve snapshot files ... a avhdx file that cannot inspect its parent ... and the disks of that vm

ADFS on Domain controller - Can't install because DC is not joined to domain?

Hello,

I want to install Active Directory Federation Services on my Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controller. When configuring the ADFS installation for the domain controller, the next error comes up during the prerequisites check:
"The target computer is not joined to a domain, only machines that are joined to a domain can be members of a AD FS farm."

This is the first Domain controller created within the environment with around 8 member servers.

Is there any way to see why Windows is giving me the error that the DC is not joined to a domain?

unattended wds client setup - language/locale page is still displayed

Hi

I am running WDS in Windows Server 2008 R2. I have created an WDS Client answer file to automated first screen (UI Language/Locale page) and disk partitioning. However, I still get the first UI Language/Locale selection page. automated disk configuration works just fine.

I have further noticed that if I include <Login> section and automated user/password/domain portion, it doesn't display UI Language/Local  page!

I just want to see the Login page and Image selection page.

Here is a copy of my current wdsClientUnattend.xml file:

Problem with WMI after using MDT/WDS to deploy

$

Hi
I am using MDT with WDS to deploy windows server.

All is fine, besides WMI from Zenoss for monitoring, it show's me errors like

" Could not read the Windows event log (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED). Check your username/password settings and verify network connectivity."

If i do the same installation by hand, everything works.

Do you have any idea how installation from MDT differs from by hand installation, that could have impact on WMI?

Multicast from IGMP compatible switch to IGMP incompatable switch?

$

Hello, I have some questions about how multicast functions in a WDS environment when one switch is IGMP enabled but others are not.

I work for a training center, and we use WDS and MDT to deploy operating system images and virtual machines onto classroom pc's every week. My company's multicast deployments have never worked as reliably as we would want, and I realized that the D-Link dgs-1024d switches we use in the classrooms are not IGMP compatible. I presume that the multicast traffic from the WDS server is being converted into broadcast traffic and transmitted to every port on the switch, which is not necessarily bad, because we are deploying to the entire room at once. What I'm unsure about is what happens when we deploy different images to different rooms at the same time. We have our WDS server connected to a Netgear GS724T Switch (which is IGMP v2 compatible), which connects to our half dozen classroom switches. We do not use VLANs, and we use only one subnet for the deployment network.

My questions are:

1. When I create two multicast transmissions at the same time (each to a different classroom), will the Netgear switch correctly forward the traffic to only the switch that connects to the computers that requested the transmission, or will the D-Link switches' inability to process IGMP cause the Netgear switch to just send the broadcast transmission to all of it's ports, causing both broadcasts to be sent to every port on the subnet?

2. If my network is guilty of spamming multiple broadcasts, what is a good way to remedy this? We are in the process of replacing our WDS server, would it be a worthwhile solution to put a half dozen nics in the new server, and connect each of the classroom switches directly to a nic in the WDS server, would that improve performance (we deploy images that are up to 40GB), or would that configuration just run into the same problems?

Thanks!

NetTcpPortSharing process won't start on Windows Server 2012 R2 (can't deploy WSE role

Hi !

I have a problem in Windows Server 2012 R2 : I have searched and try everything I know to fix this, but I cannot start NetTcpPortSharing service and therefore I cannot configure Windows Server Essentials Role, among other things.

I have theses services not starting :

  • (gupdate (Google Update))
  • NetTcpActivator
  • ADWS (keeps restarting (115 times in a few hours))
  • WseNtfSvc
  • NetTcpPortSharing
  • ServiceProviderRegistry
  • NetPipeActivator

A lot of them depend on NetTcpPortSharing service I believe. I've been googling for two days now and haven't found anything. I tried ProcessMonitor but no particular error.

The domain is quite new and reinstalling is not an option here. I'd really appreciate help guys I don't know what to do here (for any of these services)!

Thank you !

size of windows image become so large after capturing

Hi

I wanted to upload some images in my WDS .after Sysprep /oobe/generalize I used wds to capture windows 8.1 x64 .

after that capturing finished I realized that the image size is 13GB and after installation that image on a pc I found that it used 30 GB of C drive .

I used disk clean up and again did the process of capturing .this time the image is 12 GB and after installation it used 25 GB of Drive C .

I believe that there is something wrong for that huge image .I expected at most 18 or 19 GB .

Would you please give me your advice ?

thans a million
