Hi,
Our company purchased VL licenses for Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (downgradable to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) and Windows 8.1 Professional (downgradable to Win 7 Pro). On site A, we have 2 Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard servers (Server A and Server B) that have been installed long time ago with an OEM license (HP Proliant OEM DVD). I want to use some of our Win 7 Pro VL licenses and a KMS server for activation. I want the server B to be the KMS host. In order to add the KMS host role, you must perform this command using the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard KMS key:
slmgr.vbs /ipk <KmsKey>
But if I understand well, doing that will actually change the product key of Server B, therefore I would loose my OEM license and consume one of my Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard VL license, am I right?
Is there a way to make a Win Server using an OEM license as a KMS host while keeping the OEM license?
If not, what could be a solution to circumvent this issue? I was thinking about installing a virtual machine running Windows 7 Pro (using a VL license) on Server B and make it as a KMS host.
Thanks for your help as I'm new at setting up a KMS host.
