Workstations Cannot Find New Domain Controller

I configured a Windows Server 2008 enterprise server as a domain controller.  It will replace an older Windows 2000 Server.

The old domain name (on the old server) is GNMSC.local.  The new domain name is GNBristol.org.

I configured the new server as a AD DC and configured DNS, DHCP, and WINS on the new server.  I gave the new server a fixed IP that was within the range of the old DHCP range (which is the same range I set up on the new DC), and the IP does not conflict with any other assigned in the existing LAN.  With the old DC still attached to the LAN, I plugged the new DC into the LAN.  It can be pinged from workstations in the LAN and the name (GNBristolServer) resolves on the ping.

HOWEVER!  When I go to a workstation (one that pings the new server fine) and try to change the computer settings to join the new domain, I get the error:

"An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for the domain 'gnbristol.org' could not be contacted."

Then details are:

"The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AC DC) for domain 'gnbristol.org'"

The workstation thus fails to join the new domain.

What might be the problem?  How can I remedy the problem?  Thanks for any help.
