I just set up a new 2019 server and am trying to migrate and decommission the old 2008 R2.
The new server is installed and operational. I have added active directory Domain services installed, DHCP and DNS.
After configuring the new server 2019, I added it to the current domain and then transferred the FSMO roles to the new server.
When I query the FSMO roles it shows them now on the new 2019 controller.
When I unplug my old 2008 server and leave it off line a while, I can not change the password on a local machine. I get an error
"Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller, either because the machine is unavailable, or access has been denied".
Is transferring the FMSO roles all I need to do, or must i demote the old server to actually power it down and decommission it?
Currently I have 3 Domain Contollers in my network, my original 2008R2 server plus the new 2019 Domain contoller and I installed a file server which I added active directory services (intending to be a backup to the Domain contoller). All 3 servers are showing as DC Type of GC (global catalog).
What am I missing? Why if I shut down the the original 2008 R2 Domain controller i can't change password?
