NetBios - When are we going to get rid of it?

So I have a Windows 10 / Server 2016 domain test lab and when I named my PC to a long name (+15 characters), NETBIOS warning popped up.

I know NETBIOS / WINS are very old protocols and I was understanding that DNS was the replacement for them.  Are we ever going to get rid of NETBIOS?  I have a properly running DNS server and I thought I read that you can disable NETBIOS.  Is this true?  I'm NOT running any legacy apps.  Of course, testing all apps for NETBIOS requirement is needed.

As for any old legacy apps that still depend on those ancient protocols, then they can be either replaced / upgraded or put into some sort of old legacy network.

Honestly, you force us to upgrade but still hold onto ancient protocols.  Why?
