KMS Basic Questions

Just had KMS dropped on me.  Been reading white papers all morning, but still have some basic questions unanswered.

Scenario:  There are a total of 4 KMS servers:  2 servers are on Windows Server 2008 R2, and the other 2 are running on Windows Server 2012.  Single domain configuration.  Clients are running Windoes XP SP3 or Windows 7.

Questions:
1.) In a multi-KMS server environment, is there a primary/secondary server relationship?  Or is each server independent of the other?
2.) In a single domain environment, how do clients determine which KMS server to communicate with when there are multiple KMS servers available?
3.) If a client communicates with a KMS server that does not have the necessary license, does the client automatically check the other KMS servers?
4.) Lastly, does anyone know if Windows 8 clients can communicate with a KMS server running on Windows Server 2008 R2?
