Hi,
I am in a new role at an organisation where they utilise the KMS licensing model and have spent the past few days trying to pick out where the KMS hosts are.
We have an issue which is preventing some KMS client keys from activating and I was hoping I someone could please confirm a few items for me?
I have established that the following host keys are set up;
- 3 x Windows 7 client machines with Windows 7 KMS host keys (This I assume explains why we cannot activate some windows 7 KMS clients). 2 of them are offline.
- 1 x SCCM server with Office 2010 and Windows Server, Server Enterprise edition v 6.1 KMS host keys ( this works fine and I would like to confirm if I am correct in saying that the system will activate Office 2010, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 KMS Clients? Does this cover all editions of Server 2008 R2?)
- 1 x member server with Windows Server, ServerStandard edition v 6.1 kms host key (I am assuming this is covered by the above KMS host keys and can be removed)
- 1 x member server with Windows Server, ServerStandard edition v 6.3 kms host key (I believe this is explaining why we cannot activate Server 2012 R2 KMS clients)
Also we have a SQL database which holds our license keys and I cannot seem to find out from anyone how this was configured and indeed if /when the keys can be updated? We can connect to this database with the Volume Activation Tools....
So here is my plan;
Remove the host keys from all systems apart from the SCCM server, this has a Server 2008 R2 Enterprise operating system. I will keep this as the main KMS host and install the Office 2013 and Server 2012 R2 Datacenter on here, which will cover our requirements; Office 2010, office 2013, Windows 8, windows 8.1, windows 7, Server 2008 All editions, Server 2008 R2 all editions, Server 2012 all editions, Server 2012 R2 all editions. I believe that I will need to install KB2885698 to ensure this will work.
Remove the SRV record in AD (It is currently showing as one of the Incorrect Windows 7 client KMS hosts) so that it updates to show the SCCM server..
Regards
Leon
