Datacenter licencing and deployment questions.

Hi Guy's,

I was asked a month or 2 ago to think about providing a solution for a local non profit business. As this organisation can purchase the software for a heavily discounted rate, the cost of software is not a major issue.

Although I run various Linux servers in all sorts of configurations, my knowledge of windows server has mainly been limited to the SBS editions and general troubleshooting on 2008R2 servers. I have not set up a full blown 2008R2 or 2012 server in a production environment before, only a couple of 2008R2 SQL/DC installations.

I have been running the TechNet Base labs, and associated TLG's, and accustomising myself to the multiple server/virtual machine path MS recommend for Server 2012, but I am still a bit lost on the licencing and deployment scenario side of things.

I realise that Server 2012 std includes one physical and 2 virtual licences, but if I chose to use Hypervisor on the physical machine and purchased datacentre, will I then be able to use datacentre for multiple VM's under hypervisor, or is there a limit?

If I am able to use datacentre for multiple installs under hypervisor, I gather I will still need to purchase additional seats for sql and RDP users?

This client basically needs a VM running as a DC with AD, DNS, DHCP and a file share, a SQL server VM, a pooled RPD VM for external users and maybe an Exchange server (but I am thinking Office 365 may also be an option). I have been looking at LYNC also, so it may be an option later on.

I understand that the SBS editions are a different concept than an proper Server 2012 deployment, but I am still having trouble deciding on what is necessary, and what is recommended as far as secondary DC's, clustering, replication etc without going over the top.

SBS made it all so easy and I am having trouble trying to trim out the fat and finding a walkthrough on a deployment scenario that will cover what I need, and leave out what I don't.

Anyhow, thx in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction and explain the datacentre licencing limits and provide any advise on a deployment that will cover needs identified above.

Kind regards,

mmkm.
