Multihome server not able to ping other servers

I have setup several 2008 and 2008 R2 servers with dual NICs.  One NIC is for normal LAN traffic, the other NIC is dedicated to backups.  I've setup dedicated VLANs for both purposes.  The LAN traffic works fine.  Not so much for the backup NIC.  From each server I can ping the backup IP address assigned to the Ethernet switches.  A trace route shows that the traffic is going out the correct NIC.  But when I try to ping another server on the backup subnet, the ping times out.  Here is an example:

Server 1 -> 10.102.34.2 can ping 10.102.34.5 (switch)

Server 1 -> 10.102.34.2 cannot ping 10.102.34.6 (Windows server)

I have removed the default gateway from the backup NICs and added a static route that points to the Ethernet switch that acts as the router.  But traffic does not go out the backup NIC except when pinging the swiches.

Can anyone make sense of this for me?

Thanks!
Joe
