We have a 2008 R2 x64 Enterprise server that was already serving as our KMS server. It was activating Windows 7, Server 2008, and Office 2010 clients just fine.
Planning for the future need of activating Windows 8/8.1 and Server 2012/2012 R2 and Office 2013, we did the following:
Installed 2008 R2 SP1
Installed Windows6.1-KB2757817-x64
Installed Windows6.1-KB2885698-x64
Installed office2013volumelicensepack_x86_en-us, and entered our Office 2013 KMS key (got from our volume license site, as shown under Product Keys, "Office 2013 Suites and Apps KMS”, did “Activate Online”, got a successful message about activation.
Entered in our KMS key for Server 2012 R2
We have 5 PC’s running with Word 2013 open and showing “Not Activated”.
I’ve seen mention on some Microsoft articles (but not all!) about installing something called “Office Professional Plus 2013 Key Management Service Host”. The name sounds as if this is to build a KMS server if you don’t have one already, which we DID.
When I run cscript slmgr.vbs /dlv all, I see the following (I removed some URLs/IDs that may be confidential):
