I am am MCSA in 2008 and did my upgrade to exam to MCSA 2012. I was an early adopter for server 2012 at my current company and deployed a few non-essential servers pre R2. i had no issues with the os.
We are now ready to start putting out production systems in 2012 r2. However, i have run into something potentially show-stopping.
In the particular system we are deploying, remote management was intended, but ended up not being an option. so i went to install the GUI. i ran into the infamous Error : 0800f0906
i then specified the source, trying both to specify a wim and a directory, with no success. I also found the KB article indicating to download the latest volume license image, i have done so, same result. i found many suggestions online for the whys and hows behind this, including one stating that this was due to windows update.
i created a lab environment deploying server core and then attempting to apply the gui. this functioned properly, per all documentation. I created a new environment, installed server core, immediately applied windows updates, then attempted to install the GUI. this failed.
I then took the advice of some other users, and pointed to a full server 2012 r2's sxs folder. I recalled that having a network resource available for 2012 servers as a repository was suggested during my studies. So i installed a full 2012 r2 system, applied all updates, and shared its winsxs folder. using that reference, the feature installation installation still failed.
I then examined all of the updates applied to the GUI system. I listed and downloaded them individually from the Microsoftupdate catalog and used dism to apply all of the updates to installation media.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff794819.aspx
that not only doesn't work, but appears to invalidate the wim after the changes are committed. I cannot re-mount or examine the wim at all.
also, i am making the assumption that this is supposed to download the feature from Microsoft update, and i would only need to reference a local installation media if there was no connection to the internet. this is NOT THE CASE in either my labs OR my production environment.
If there is some new process for this, i have failed to locate any relevant information. Can anyone provide me with a way to do this?
Thank you for your input.
