WDS Error Injecting Drivers Into Boot Image

0
0

I have a WS2008R2 WDS server setup.  I am the local domain admin with full access to the domain.  When i try to inject drivers into the boot.wim file i get the error "A required privilege is not held by the client"  i get the same error msg if i try to use the dism command from the command prompt.  I also get the same error msg if i try to create a discover or capture image.

any help with figuring this out would be greatly apreciated.

Driver Added to Boot.wim not working in capture

On Server 2012 RS Standard created a capture image from Windows 7 Pro.  Injected the  I217-LM driver into the capture image.  When I boot from this image and do a SHIFT+F10 and run IPconfig I do not have an IP address.  If I manually load the drivers I can pull an IP address.  I have checked the capture image and the drivers are present.  I can create an image and manually copy it to the WDS server but would really like to be able just uplade the image at the time of capture.

Any ideas?

Standalone WDS on Windows 2012 R2 won't work

Hello,

I recently imported install images, boot images and unattended answer files to WDS @ 2012 R2 from my old WDS @ 2k8 R2. All install images include drivers as they are model-specific. All images use the same unattended file (image-specific answer file, not the global one).

New server responds to client requests without any problems. I can get into the install wizard and quickly select image I want to deploy. Everything is working fine till I get to customization stage. After 'setup is installing devices' screens I'm asked to select a timezone and other things that are provided in the answer file. It seems the client computers can't download the answer file becuase their connection is down. And it should not be down because there are drivers in the install images, am I right? I am unable to obtain an IP address on a client computer.

This works perfectly though when I use my old server for deployments.

Any ideas?

No changes have been made to the images or answer files, they were simply exported to *.wim and imported to the new server.

It's Windows 7 x86 I'm trying to deploy, using a 32-bit boot.wim from Windows 7.

win PE x64: how to do a memory check?

Is there an automate-able way to do a memory check within WinPE x64?  All the tools I see out there are either 32-bit (and consequently won't run in WinPE).  I'm using WinPE from the Win7 OPK, amd64 architecture.

Not prompted to set Administrator password at logon after Sysprep

As far as I know, the following are facts regarding the Administrator password on Windows 2008 R2:

- By default the Administrator account is enabled and the password is blank, but you are forced to set a password at first logon after Windows installation

- Sysprep is supposed to set the Administrator password to blank, unless one is indicated in the unattend file.

On my 2008 R2 images I want to be prompted to set the Administrator password after the image is deployed (and after sysprep has been run on the source machine), but for some reason this is not happening.  Instead it just comes up with a logon screen and expects the password that was used on the source machine.

I just want the same behavior as when 2008 R2 is installed from media, which is for the Administrator account to have a blank password, but where I am forced to set one at first boot.  I have tried setting the password to blank on the source machine before running sysprep, but then it just automatically logs on the Administrator on the first boot, which I don't want.

What setting can I look for that may be causing this?  On a previous image which I created using the same unattend file, this worked as I wanted it to, thus the reason I believe it's a setting on my source machine.

Thanks.

Wipe Hard Drive clean install of Window Server

What is the best way to wipe Hard Drive? Save a partition for later use and use remaining partition to install Sever OS, save to external drive(to use later) and wipe completely(cleanest install, I believe), complete wipe completely not worrying about saving anything, or suggestions?

NOTE; The machine has never been turned on, still in the box.  Hardware goes above and beyond Min. Requirements for software.

Which is the best way to install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Evaluation download - ISO image? Azure?

How to install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials from ISO image- Download and burn to DVD,  Save to USB or to actual machine?

How to install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials from Azure? (Don't have Azure account)

I need to have it completed ASAP so I can install Accounting/PM database software. Need it operational Monday if all possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Upgrading from 2008 R2 Standard to 2008 R2 Enterprise

I have in production 5 servers with 2008 R2 Standard utilizing 24GB RAM each.  One server is running an application that needs more memory to prevent it from crashing daily as it does now. We decided to upgrade all servers to 32GB of RAM however with the cost of RAM so inexpensive, we considered bumping the memory to 64GB for the one machine that needs more memory, hence the upgrade to Enterprise. I have only 50 users in the company that access the systems.

My question is this: When I purchase the Enterprise version, do my licenses transfer with it or must I re-purchase a 50 user EULA?

The cost of adding memory can become prohibitive factoring in the Enterprise license plus the EULA if it's required.

Thanks

The user name or password is incorrect when configuring my WDS server

Hi guys,

After looking around I couldn't find a problem that was identical to mine, sorry if it has been answered before but I could not find it.

I am currently in charge of imaging over 200 machines and while trying to configure my WDS server, on the very last prompt of the WDS config wizard it tells me the user name or password is incorrect. Here's how it's setup:

Integrated with AD

The remote installation IS on the same partition as the OS

Respond only to known client computers

This server is not the domain controller nor the DHCP server, however our labs do use DHCP and this server is a part of the domain. I am logged in as the local administrator so I'm not quite sure why I am receiving this error. Any help would be much appreciated!

Inttermittent Trouble with Windows Deployment Services

0

I am hoping to get some advice on some of the WDS issues we have been having over the past 4-5 months

We have a relativity simple network topology

Out workstations on one subnet and servers across a WAN link on a separate subnet with a juniper firewall in the middle

The WDS server is 2008r2

The problem we are having is that every few weeks we seem to lose the ability to PXE boot across the firewall to the WDS server

The WDS server gives us the following error

The Following Client failed TFTP Download:

IP: 10.10.34.95
Filename: \Boot\x64\Images\DaRT7.wim
ErrorCode: 1460

Which seems to be related to a time out

1460 is ERROR_TIMEOUT. This message means that the client started downloading the file, but didn't finish and the server is terminating the connection since it hasn't seen any packets from the client in a long time.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/a1246f62-6a8a-482b-9323-7e02dfeab196/wds-tftp-errorcode-1460

I have a hard time believing this because it works successfully for weeks at a time.

I have looked a wire shark trace to see what is happening on the wire, and it look like the TFTP packets are transmitting until a random point and then stop.

I immediately suspect the firewall, however I'm told by our firewall people that the firewall is not configured to stop TFTP packets,

Any Advice would be greatly appreciated

Below is an example of the the TFTP traffic at the point of failure

Example of traffic

To add to this I was able to obtain the trail of the tracing log

Windows 7 image issues on dell e6430

hello everyone, we are using windows deployment services to deploy images and have two issues:

1.  Display driver comes up with Standard VGA graphics when it should be Intel HD Graphics 4000

2.  Windows 7 is not automatically activated and you have to click to auto activate windows

For issue #1 the Intel HD Graphics 4000 are loaded and on the machine, we took an image with this driver but after setup it comes up with the generic driver.  To resolve this you have to open device manager right click and search/install.  Again, the drivers are in c:\windows so its weird that it doesnt detect it automatically.

For issue #2 you just click windows activation under computer properties and it activates.  If we let it sit in the office it will eventually activate.  the issue becomes when we give it to a remote user and forget to activate it.  they dont readily have access to KMS so it wont activate without inputting the keys.  We tried using the MAK in the answer file and that didnt work so are using KMS.

What we would like is for #1 to automatically install the proper driver.  For #2 we would like windows to activate right away, not after a random day or by manually forcing it.

anyone have any fixes?

Thank you,

Sysprep generalize fails

I'm trying to build a template Hyper-V vm for a Remote Desktop server farm.  All the required programs are installed, the local admin account profile is configured how I want it.  I have a CopyProfile.xml as described here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825135

The only profiles remaining are the local admin & default; the sysprep process fails in the same way regardless of using the unattend file or not.  This started as a vanilla 2012r2 install, with Office 2013, various accounting programs, and the RDS host role.  The server works properly, and there were no event log errors to note.

I've looked over various other sysprep error reports, and none of them really apply (this is not a licensing/rearm issue).  Anyone have an idea of what the problem is?

2012 Deployment using WDS

I was wondering does anyone use WDS to deploy 2012/2012R2 to HP Proliant servers (G7s,G8s,G9s)?

If so, can you tell me your experience?  Easy to setup and use as compared to Intelligent Provisioning on the G8s and G9s?

Thanks!

WDS pending device approve - access denied

We have installed fresh WDS server ( windows server 2012 R2)

When we try to approve pending device we receive access denied message and device approve request stay in pending state.

1. Access rights to OU exist and Computer.

2. Computer account created in AD.

3. Computer start boot.

What access rights more needed?

Setting Up A Trust Relationship Between Two 2008 R2 Servers

Im trying to get this done between two servers local in our office.  I want server B to have access to server A.   Do I set up the trust on server A or server B?

When I try to set it up on server A, it doesn't see server B when asked for the name of the domain.

Setupcomplete.cmd with WDS ?

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

we have been using setupcomplete.cmd in the "sources\$OEM$\$$\setup\scripts" folder of the Installation DVD to add unattended content to a Vista/W2K8 installation after setup completed. We now would like to move to WDS as quickly as possible without rewriting all our scripts. Is it somehow possible to use setupcomplete.cmd with a Vista/W2K8 installation from WDS ? If yes, into which folder do I have to copy the cmd on the WDS server so it gets used by Vista setup ?

Thanks a lot for your help !

Network boot EFI client using WDS on Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi,

I just installed WDS on Windows server 2008 R2. I have the DHCP server and WDS on the same system. I have configured WDS and added the x64 boot and install images. I am trying to network boot an x64 efi based client. The client successfully obtains a DHCP address. Now, in the network trace, I observe that the first file to be downloaded is always the wdsmgfw.efi file.

1. Initially, I added the Windows 2008 SP2 boot image. The boot\x64\ folder did not have the wdsmgfw.efi file and TFTP request would fail.

2. I added the Windows 2008 R2 boot image. This created the wdsmgfw.efi file in the boot\x64\ folder. Now the TFTP download succeeds. Then I end up with a black screen.

I made the"bootmgfw.efi" the default boot program for x64 systems. Even then, the TFTP request is always for "wdsmgfw.efi". What is the wdsmgfw.efi file for? Is this being requested by the client? I got a feeling that if the bootmgfw.efi file is downloaded, I will be able to install and boot properly.

Do I need to set any option? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

WDS on VSphere DHCP on Bare Metal

Hello,
I am currently running into an issue with WDS on a Windows server 2012 Datacenter edition. The WDS server is running on Vsphere but the DHCP/DC server are running on a standalone Physical box (Bare Metal). Booting to the WDS server via Network boot from a client PC (hardware on same subnet). I am having intermittent issues with it not being able to find the WDS to boot to. 3/5 times it will fail. On the WDS it self I am running Vmware Workstation to build the images and I am able to boot just fine to the WDS essentially from itself.
PLEASE HELP

Note: I have set up 3 other WDS servers in similar environments that all function famously. The sole difference is that the WDS and DHCP/DC both reside on VSPHERE in all of the other environments.

Also note: I am not running system center but could not find a suitable forum otherwise.
