adding secondary DNS/DC to windows 2003 domain

hello, I inherited a environment with 2 separate domain controllers sharing one DNS server (all windows 2003). The DNS server is in the first domain, however the second domain uses this as its DNS as well.

There is no redundancy here, I have created a second DNS server and intend to configure/replicate secondary zone for DNS here.  I only use the second domain, however the DNS is in the first domain. Question here is would I need to create two other separate DC for redundancy? Any windows 2003/2008 limitations? Thanks for your help.

Our company is called domainA.com. They have opened a brand new company called domainB.com. What is the best way to create a domain for domainB so both domains can use the same exchange 2010 server to send and receive email? I want users in domainA to keep their user@domainA.com email address while domainB users have user@domainB.com, and not, user@domainB.domainA.com.

Thank you!

WDS AD DS Name overwrite unattended hostname?

$

Hello gents.

I´m in need of assistance.

The question is simple:

Will the "Client Nameing Policy" in the AD DS tab overwrite the "Computername" in the unattended.xml file?

Example:

I set a name in the client nameing policy "Computer-inet-#03%" so all the computers that will be prestagede in the specified OU will be called "Computer-inet-001" and so forth.

However, a computer name will also be specified in the unattended.xml, so which one is the bigger man? Is there any possibility to force the unattended to inherit the name from the nameing policy? Is it enough to just set the computername in the unattended marked as Computername="*"? Or just remove the "Computername=" line completely?

I have been testing it abit but for some reason i just get a random generated name like: "WINNXTECSAS-2DA31".

Thanks!

HP Wireless MSM 720 Wireless AP & WLC cannot authentication with Radius

Hi guy

I am having problems setting up RADIUS authentication for Wireless clients. We have wireless are using WPA2 Enterprise security to allow access to any users that have a domain account. We have set up NPS on the domain controller and are trying to use PEAP-MSCHAPv2 as the auth method. The RADIUS server is registered in Active Directory and is able to validate users, but the process fails at the certificate stage.

I have enabled tracing on the server and the logs from various files are below. We have tried many different combinations of authentication methods and the error is always the same.

Currently the policy conditions are as follows;

NAS Port Type - Wireless - IEEE 802.11
Allowed EAP Types - PEAP
Authentication Types - PEAP

Any help/support you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

WDS Deployment - Unable to get Intel 82579LM drivers to work in WinPE environment

I am slowly going crazy with this!!

We have WDS installed on Windows 2008R2 server. We've been using it fine for years deploying various Windows XP images.

I recently created a new Win7 x64 image, and have been successfully deploying it to various hardware platforms. We use Dell almost exclusively, and I've treid the Windows 7 image on various different models.

We've recently taken delivery of a Dell Optiplex 7010 USFF unit, with Intel 82579LM ethernet chipset.

I am unable to capture or deploy to that unit. I get an error stating WDSClient: no matching network controller.

Here's what I've tried so far...

I've injected the x64 drivers from the Dell website, and also tried injecting the ones directly from Intel - no joy. I used DISM to inject, and using the /get-drivers option can verify that they're injected ok. I did also try the x86 drivers in case there was an issue.

I've added a package within the WDS environment and added it to both the boot and capture image I want to use.

I've added the path to the WinPE pass within my WDS unattend file. Still not working.

I even pulled the boot.wim file from the Dell media, created new boot and capture images, injected the drivers again and still no joy.

If I try to capture, I can't access the WDS server. Shift-F10, then running IPCONFIG shows no IP address. If I DRVLOAD the same drivers that I am injecting, I can get IP address from DHCP, which assures me I'm using the correct drivers.

I really have no idea what else to try at this stage. What have I missed?

Thanks in advance.

Accessing an unattend.xml file file stored on USB?

I've been reading and trying about a million different ways to be able to apply a WIM file that I sysprepped.  I am using imagex and I thought I read that the unattend.xml file can be read from the root of the USB.

Can anyone confirm that this is supposed to work?  I have a custom WIM file so I am not talking about an autounattend.xml that can supposedly be used with the original installation media, although I suppose I could replace the install.wim file on there or whatever it is with the WIM I am using and use the autoattend?  That is really a secondary question I just thought of but I'd like to know if I can get the unattend.xml to be read from the USB.

The reason for this is that I am trying to set a PC name, static IP, etc after prompting a user from it.  I would like to do a search & replace in the unattend.xml rather than having to try to rename the PC after the WIM is restored and a generic name is given.  This way I figure I can join the domain and whatnot with less reboots, making the process less painful.

Long story short, it isn't working.

Setting up 08R2 domain. Would like to copy over users, groups, group policies from a separate 03 domain.

What would be the best way to do this? A trust can be established between domains without causing any issue.

Items that need to come over are groups, users, and group policies as well as a handful of startup scripts. I'd also need to point anything from the other domain to now point to the new domain.

Storage Maximum in Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi,

I need to configure a Windows Server for storing the backups. This is the configurations.

Dell PE R 710 Server

6 x 3 TB HDD

I want to install Windows Operating System. After some searches, here are my findings.

1. Configure RAID at the hardware level. (RAID 6, using all the 6 HDD, effective storage space is 12 TB)

2. Enable UEFI

3. Install Windows in an GPT partition in a volume of size 200 GB

The remaining space would be dedicated for storing the backups.

Question. Which Operating System would you recommend? I am planning to go with Windows 2008 R2 Standard ($$$)

Question. Will my above plan work? Anyone who has tried similar setup have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Problems with Windows 2000 and WDS

$

I have a problem making an image of windows 2000 professional with WDS.
In my network we use WDS since RIS, and we image everything from XP to Windows 7 without problems.
Yesterday I needed to deploy a single old image with Windows 2000, and I discovered that it was stil uploaded in the old server RIS.
I correctly deployed the image, then I decided to move it over the new server (Windows 2003, WDS, Mixed Mode).
But when I sysprep my image with Windows 2000, I cannot upload it on the server. When I start windows PE (version 6.1, extracted from the Windows 7 DVD), in the combo box that is present in the first form of the upload software, I cannot see any disk.
This effect appears with every switch that I can use with Sysprep 1.1 available for Windows 2000.

Has anyone a answer for this question?

Greetings.

[How to?] Implement Dual-Boot Deployments with WDS

$

Hi everyone,

Recently, I've been working with WDS in order to create images to deploy into our computers. One of them consists in a regular image(base image), and the other one is Full of stuff which requires to many configurations in order to be able to automate the setup using scripts.

Having that said, I have the need to ensure that both images can be deployed in the same PC(dual boot). What is the best approach so that I can automate the deployment?

I thought in an approach using WinPE in the Image unattend file to create the partitions(2 partitions) and install 1st image in 1st partition, and the 2nd image simply install in the second partition. But this isn't possible, as far as I've seen, because the WinPE is used when WDS image loads up.

So I'm kinda trying to figure out how will I achieve this.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Nuno Silva

How to create an Image to be hardware independant

Dear all,

First of all, I am not an expert in IT so apologies in advance for may be basic things I may ask.

We have today in house a selected brand of PC with standad configuration that we install in an industrial environment.
We that standard system, we have setup an Image of a base reference PC that we install on any others on demand.

Our reference system are used with a thrid party RAID control configured as RAID 1 array.

The problem we try to anticipate is when the standard PC we use is not available anymore or if the third aprty RAID controler is not existing anymore and need to be change. In such situation we will have to create again a new Image.

What we are looking for ideally is to be able to re install our image in any other type of PC. We have test for instance to restore our Image on a PC without the raid controler installed and the System refuse to start.

Is they a way to build an Image froé an existing reference system that can be install on a PC which do not necessary have same components ?

At that time default compatible driver can be install by windows itself. The only special component we have is the RAID controler actually.

Thanks for your information

regards

Hello Everyone

Currently when deploying a physical server I currently use the following configuration for my system drive

Disk 1

C Partition - Windows Files

D Partition - Applications

E Partition - User profiles TMP \ TEMP files and Page file

Disk 2

F Partition - Data \ Application and Data if cant be separated

Should I continue to use this when setting up virtual servers? Are there any best practices specifically for Virtual Servers and partition layouts?

Thanks

WDS not showing images

$

I have read a lot of threads in these and other forums about this issue, none have helped.  Here's the info:

Server 2008R2 (fully updated) running WDS, separate R2 server running DHCP

Server and client are on the same subnet

Boot and Install images are all Win 7 based

Systems PXE boot just fine, and at command prompt (shift+F10) ipconfig shows proper networking and net use shows the reminst directory on the server is mounted

Booting from a capture image (made on WDS from the normal boot.wim already loaded) also works fine, and an image can be captured and shows up in WDS as expected

Permissions on all directories are such that the authenticating account has full read and write as well as just read from at least 3 groups

No images are available for restore, including an image made previously and manually added to WDS, the base Win7 install wim from the commercial media, and the image uploaded to WDS by capture from that same machine.

So, the normal issues of network drivers missing, system compatibility, and permissions are all out the window because network is verified as working, the one image is from the same machine, and the image was captured so permissions are clearly fine.

The Application log in Event Viewer shows this error twice every time you get to the point where the client should be listing restore images:

Source: WDSIMGSRV

EventID: 260

An error occurred while processing an image enumeration request.

Error Information: 0x2

Keywords 0x80000000000000

If only it told me what the problem actually was... Any ideas what this means and how to fix it?

I wanted to install windows on my clients with AIK. I made imageX and WinPE. when I put WinPE CD in CD-ROM and wanted to set IP on"local area connection" inteface, I faced with this problem.

when I type "show address" in CMD, it just shows"loopback P-Suedo interface".

How can I make my PC to recognize "local area connection" ?

I just mention that it is a new (raw) system and I have never install OS on it.

Hi,

I am creating a RRAS VPN server for my lab (Windows 2003). Eventually Im having a hard time configuring it. I know that RRAS VPN server has two NICS. One facing the internet and one facing the LAN. THe problem is, I have my modem from my ISP which distributes Private IP address. So my RRAS server has a private IP coming from my ISP Modem and the other one is Private IP address which I implemented for my LAN. Kindly help me how RRAS server can be access in the internet. I tried to check my public ip in whatismyIP.com, and put it in the NIC connecting to my ISP modem but to no avail.

ADFS 2.0 Relying Party Dropdown list won't update on SSO page

$

Recently I was tasked with adding an additional Relying Party Trust to an organization's ADFS 2.0.  After doing so, I am able to launch the SSO site, login and then manually browse to the URL for the trust successfully.  So, I believe all the claims are passing properly and authentication is working.  However, we would now like the new Relying Party Trust to go live but I am unable to get the new Trust name to show up in the dropdown list on the SSO site.  I have dug through the IIS pages and everything I can see references a "RelyingPartyDropDownList".  If I change the Display name on the other Relying Party Trusts, they are immediately updated in the dropdown so it would seem to me that the data is being read from somewhere.

Let me know if you have any possible resolutions to making my new Trust visible in the dropdown or if you need any further information.

Thank you,

Jeremy
